Nom de Guerre
Nom de Guerre is a creative collective founded by Holly Harnsongkram, Wil Whitney, Devon Turnbull, and Isa Saalabi. The concept of the collective is to combine basic and diverse influences from art, fashion, and various New York subcultures to create a composite culture and product.
The Fall/Winter 2006 clothing line mixes inspiration from "Povinnost", the Aleksandr Sokurov film about a Russian naval commander and ship posted in the Arctic; and Stan Brakhage's film, "Dog Star Man", the non-linear work which contains images of a man and his dog in a winter wilderness.
The collection consists of sweaters made from heavy wool-cashmere yarn; rugged plaid flannels; nautical stripes; waxed cotton outerwear; classic herringbone wool; marine inspired heavy cotton fleece; and raw gray denim.
The main store opened October, 2003, in downtown Manhattan. Situated in a multi-level subterranean space on the corner of Broadway and Bleecker streets. The building is well known in downtown circles as a former meeting place of the Black Panthers. Invisible to the average passerby, the space is inspired by underground sites such as bunkers, tunnels, and archeological digs, creating a sense of otherworldliness. Nom de Guerre has the look of a high-end Army/Navy outpost with a similar emphasis on utilitarian basics.
